Here’s a quick overview of the 2nd grade curriculum!
Math: Our units will cover a variety of topics such as
Social Studies: We will be focusing on various branches of Social Studies this year under the main theme of communities. We’ll study history, geography, civics, sociology, and economics.
Science: Our science units follow the Next Generation Science Standards. Using Battle Creek science kits as well as Mystery Science, students will participate in hands on activities that encourage inquiry, exploration and deeper thinking skills. Each unit covered will include a combination of videos, experiments, and text. Here are the topics we’ll cover:
Bible: We use the CSI (Christian Schools International) Bible curriculum. We will begin with a brief study of the book of James followed by a short review of the Old Testament. The majority of our year will be spent studying the New Testament including the ministry of Jesus as well as the travels of the Apostle Paul. Memory verses will be taught using motions. Videos demonstrating these motions will be provided for optional practice at home. We’ll also be focusing on the names of God as part of our Trust theme this year.
Penmanship: We use the Zaner-Bloser manuscript method. During the first semester we will review the formation of the manuscript letters and try to make good penmanship part of our daily work. Cursive will be introduced during the second semester.
English: Attention will focus on basic grammar skills such as:
Reading: We are using the Lucy Calkins Reading Series. This is a continuation of the Lucy Calkins Reading used in kindergarten and first grade. Some of the topics that are covered are
Writing: Each week we will be writing a different type of paragraph including sequence of events, descriptive, opinion, persuasive, and informative. Some paragraphs will involve doing research individually, while others will involve a partner. Topics are based on monthly themes such as back to school and Johnny Appleseed in September. All writing addresses different Michigan state standards. We will also do informal writing in a journal with the aim of getting our ideas out on paper easily.
Spelling: Our spelling curriculum comes from the book Words Their Way. It is a research based curriculum that helps students fully understand the sounds of the words they spell and different rules that go along with spelling them. Each student will work on word sorts that are at his/her developmental level based teacher given assessments. All practice will be done at school, and an assessment will be given at the end of each full week.
